Objective of the role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Assure team, combining hands on engineering, architectural leadership, and line management responsibilities.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to and influence architectural decisions across backend and cloud systems

  • Provide senior technical oversight in production environments

  • Act as a line manager for engineers, supporting their career development, performance, and technical growth

  • Remain hands-on with coding and system design

This is a senior-level role for someone who can balance technical depth, operational awareness, and people leadership, helping shape both the platform’s technical direction and the growth of the team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and influence architecture and design decisions across backend and platform systems

  • Design and implement backend services using modern Java (17+)

  • Provide senior technical oversight across operational and production environments

  • Collaborate closely with product, platform, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure technical alignment

  • Review and improve system architecture, performance, scalability, and reliability

  • Support infrastructure evolution, including containerised and cloud-native environments

  • Participate in and guide technical discussions, code reviews, and design reviews

  • Diagnose and resolve complex production issues where required

  • Help establish and uphold engineering standards, development processes, and release practices

  • Act as a line manager for engineers, including: Conducting regular 1:1 meetings, Providing performance feedback and growth guidance, Supporting career development and mentorship

Essential skills and experience:

  • Strong experience building and maintaining backend systems in Java (17+)

  • Solid experience working within AWS environments, including ECS, EKS, and Lambda

  • Strong object-oriented programming (OOP) knowledge and design principles

  • Strong understanding of API concepts and distributed systems

  • Experience working with containerised environments (e.g., Docker)

  • Practical knowledge of Kubernetes and container orchestration concepts

  • Experience working with Infrastructure as Code principles and tooling, such as Terraform

  • Experience contributing to architectural decisions in production systems

  • Strong problem-solving skills in complex technical environments

  • Experience mentoring or line managing engineers

  • Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills

Nice to have:
  • Experience with Go in backend systems

  • Knowledge of OAuth 2.0 concepts and secure token-based systems

  • Understanding of TLS and secure communication principles

  • Experience working in security-sensitive or regulated environments
