NEW CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Build your career with Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados). Make a difference to others. If innovation drives you, and you want a career that makes a difference to the world, helping humanity overcome the challenges in our oceans – safely, efficiently, and sustainably – then come join us at Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados).

Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados)
is currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our team. This position can be Remote or working out of any of our Global Offices.

Kraken’s Sensor Research Group (SRG) is dedicated to accelerating innovation in sensor technology through agile prototyping and hands-on experimentation. By rapidly exploring new concepts and technical pathways, the team aims to uncover opportunities and address potential limitations early in development—well before significant resources are committed to scaling or commercialization.

The SRG also addresses urgent technology challenges, defects, and operational issues by leveraging in-house Subject Matter Experts to develop fast, field-testable solutions. This quick feedback loop helps refine or redirect development efforts efficiently.

We are currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist with expertise in marine data processing. Experience with AI/ML techniques applied to sensor data is a strong asset.

Kraken fosters a culture of collaboration, experimentation, and calculated risk-taking. Within the SRG, this translates to rapid prototyping, frequent iteration, and close engagement with operators to ensure solutions are grounded in real-world performance. The group values agility over perfection - quickly developing and testing ideas to learn what works, what doesn't, and where to go next.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and execute strategic research initiatives within the Sensor Research Group.
  • Conduct hands-on R&D and prototyping across Kraken’s portfolio of underwater sensor systems, sonar processing, and machine learning-based analytics.
  • Identify innovation opportunities and assess emerging technologies in sensor processing and data analytics.
  • Enhance and expand Kraken’s data processing pipelines, workflows, and infrastructure.
  • Improve access to existing datasets and apply them to model training, validation, and broader team use in research and development efforts.
  • Contribute to the scientific community through collaborative research, conference participation, academic publications, and partnerships with universities.
  • Support business development through technical discussions with customers and contributions to proposal writing.
  • Participate in knowledge-sharing events, technical workshops, and cross-functional innovation discussions.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Master’s / PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on data processing, machine learning, or sensor analytics.
  • Experience:
    • 8+ years experience in research and development or industry
    • Experience with marine data processing
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Experience in cloud infrastructure and scaling
    • Knowledge of marine geospatial data and related formats
    • Background in machine learning and large data processing
    • Proficiency in Python and C++
    • Familiarity with GPU-accelerated computing and distributed data architectures
    • Knowledge of sensor fusion, sonar processing, sensor processing and data analysis, or other relevant technologies.
    • Familiarity with underwater environment dynamics and applications of underwater sensor systems.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities with a focus on innovation and practical application.
  • Proven ability to self-organize research efforts, including defining and pursuing ambitious technical objectives.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, and highly collaborative environment.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and rapid prototyping approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting technical findings and collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Effective at managing time and resources in support of evolving research priorities.
