About the Opportunity:
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer to join our team and take ownership of our client platform, a multi-tenant SaaS e-commerce application serving dealers, distributors, and manufacturers across the United States. You will work on a mature, high-traffic Rails application with deep integrations across payments, shipping, compliance, and a wide network of firearms industry distributors.
What You Will Work On:
- Maintaining and extending a multi-tenant Rails 6.1 application serving numerous independent storefronts
- Building and optimizing APIs consumed by partner integrations and third-party storefronts
- Managing complex background job pipelines that sync product catalogs, pricing, and inventory from more than a dozen distributors
- Improving search performance and relevance using OpenSearch/Searchkick
- Owning the reliability and performance of the platform end-to-end, from the database layer to the front-end views
- Be part of the project to refactor the application
- Diagnose and resolve production issues, performance bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities
- Design and implement new features from requirements through deployment
- Review pull requests and mentor junior engineers where applicable
- Maintain and improve test coverage across models, controllers, services, and background jobs
- Participate in on-call rotation for production incidents
- Collaborate with product and operations teams to scope and prioritize technical work
- Keep dependencies up to date and lead incremental upgrades (Ruby version, Rails version, gem dependencies)
Core:
- 5+ years of professional Ruby on Rails development
- Deep understanding of ActiveRecord, database design, and complex query optimization with PostgreSQL
- Experience building and maintaining multi-tenant Rails applications
- Comfortable working with Sidekiq and Redis for background job processing, queue management, and rate-limiting
- Strong knowledge of RESTful API design and JSON serialization (jBuilder)
- Proficiency with Bootstrap, jQuery, CoffeeScript, and SASS
- Familiarity with Slim templating
- Ability to build and maintain server-rendered UI with light JS enhancement
- Experience with AWS services S3 (file storage), SES (email), and OpenSearch
- Familiarity with Redis and Memcached for caching and session management
- Understanding of Cloudflare CDN and proxy configurations
- Comfortable working with background job scheduling
- Experience integrating third-party payment providers Stripe, payment gateway abstraction via ActiveMerchant
- Familiarity with EasyPost or similar shipping rate/label APIs
- Experience with TaxJar or equivalent sales tax calculation services
- Prior work on multi-storefront SaaS or e-commerce platforms
- Experience with fraud detection tools such as Sift Science or Signifyd
- Working knowledge of OpenSearch / Elasticsearch relevance tuning and index management
- Experience with ActionCable (WebSockets) for real-time features
