Description

Under close supervision of the Supervisor, Engineering Inspection, performs routine construction inspections of public water supply facilities. This position requires frequent use of a Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados) vehicle in the execution of its duties and responsibilities.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs routine construction inspections of public water supply facilities by:
    • Reviewing plans, specifications and cut sheets for construction projects.
    • Inspecting the installation and repair of water mains, valves, fittings, hydrants, pipe bedding, air releases, and concrete blocking of all fittings.
    • Assuring all the components of water facilities are properly tested and sampled, and all materials used are approved products. Issuing material as appropriate.
    • Working with contractors and other utilities to assure the job is performed properly, including checking to avoid conflicts with other facilities.
    • Checking to see if conflicts exist between the Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados)’s facilities and those of other utilities.
    • Ensuring compliance with FW design/construction standards.
    • Writing a variety of reports to include daily and monthly progress reports, completion and testing reports, and photographic documentation. o Inspecting the proper restoration of storm drains, culverts, sanitary sewer lines, manholes, and roadways damaged during the installation of water facilities.
    • Preparing a variety of records to include sample sheets, daily reports, in-service notices, material issue and return tickets, GIS data collection, and as-built drawings.
    • Checking line and grade, elevations, and dimensions to confirm proper installation of work.
    • Coordinating outages with Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados) departments and notifying customers of shutdowns and following up on complaints.
    • Measuring and computing quantities of material for payment purposes.
    • Making final inspections and approvals after corrections are made.
    • Assisting in laying out small Confidencial (Apenas para Cadastrados) projects.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Typical Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and a minimum of three years progressively responsible construction or inspection experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and materials used in installation of water and sewer mains, and restoring pavement and property.
  • Knowledge of cement, asphalt, and concrete methods.
  • Knowledge of surveying, hydraulics, and welding
  • Knowledge of VDOT standards, requirements, and traffic control measures.
  • Skilled in the detection of faulty materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and make accurate computations, drawings and reports.
  • Ability to use or be trained in computer applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with contractors, co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to regularly operate and drive a vehicle in the execution of normal duties.
  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, climb ladders, and lift 50 pounds.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment.
To Qualify as an Engineering Inspector I, you must have:
  • Graduation from high school and a minimum of three years progressively responsible construction or inspection experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and materials used in installation of water and sewer mains, and restoring pavement and property.
To Qualify as an Engineering Inspector II, you must have:
  • Graduation from high school and a minimum of four years progressively responsible construction or inspection experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge.
  • Considerable knowledge of the materials and methods used in installation of water and sewer mains and restoring pavement and property.
  • Good knowledge of construction contract administration.
  • Good Knowledge of VDOT standards, requirements, and traffic control measures.
