Summary

The Google Cloud Engineer (Core Operations) is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust, scalable, and highly available cloud infrastructure. This role focuses on leveraging core Google Cloud Platform (GCP) technologies—particularly Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and Cloud Run—to build secure, efficient, and resilient cloud environments.

The engineer serves as a bridge between application development and cloud infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration, optimal performance, and operational excellence throughout the cloud lifecycle.


Job Duties

Containerization & Orchestration

  • Design, configure, and manage production-grade Kubernetes clusters using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
  • Optimize cluster scaling, resource allocation, and container scheduling.

Serverless Deployment

  • Deploy and manage scalable microservices and applications using Cloud Run.
  • Optimize configurations for concurrency, memory allocation, and cold-start performance.

Automation & CI/CD

  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and deployment pipelines using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD frameworks.
  • Ensure reliable, repeatable, and efficient software releases.

Core Cloud Operations

  • Manage core GCP services, including:
    • Compute Engine
    • Cloud Storage
    • BigQuery
  • Ensure resource optimization, lifecycle management, and cost efficiency.

Security & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain cloud security best practices, including:
    • IAM roles
    • Least-privilege access controls
    • VPC Service Controls
    • Encryption for data at rest and in transit

Operational Excellence

  • Monitor infrastructure using Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Logging.
  • Implement proactive alerting, troubleshooting, and performance optimization for distributed systems.

Collaboration

  • Partner with software engineering teams to define deployment strategies, infrastructure best practices, and cloud-native application architectures.

Technical Documentation

  • Create and maintain architecture diagrams, operational runbooks, disaster recovery plans, and other technical documentation.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience in Cloud Engineering or DevOps, with a strong focus on cloud infrastructure and platform operations.
  • Proven hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) supporting enterprise-scale environments.
  • Demonstrated experience deploying, scaling, and operating production workloads using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and Cloud Run.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Crossplane, or Pulumi.
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture, containerization, Docker, and cloud-native application lifecycle management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Cloud Architecture

  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architectures, high availability, resiliency, and disaster recovery strategies within GCP.

Networking

  • Strong knowledge of cloud networking, including:
    • Cloud DNS
    • Cloud Load Balancing
    • VPC Peering
    • Shared VPC
    • Firewalls

Security & Identity

  • Strong expertise in:
    • GCP IAM
    • Service Accounts
    • Secret Management
    • Cloud security best practices

Programming & Automation

  • Ability to develop automation and configuration scripts using:
    • Bash
    • Python
    • Go
    • Node.js

Problem Solving

  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex infrastructure, networking, and performance issues in distributed environments.

Communication

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into practical operational solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Google Cloud certifications such as:

    • Associate Cloud Engineer
    • Professional Cloud Architect

    are considered a plus but are not required.
